Community Development
COCAFCAL is a small coffee producers’ organization voluntarily joined by common needs, as well as similar economic, social and cultural aspirations. We practice a model of joint property, democratically controlled, based on cooperative principles, where all its members believe in shared ethical values.
Our Cooperative achieved its first “Organic Sale” to ELAN Organic Coffee. We received a premium of US $30 Dollars per burlap sack, a third of this money was dedicated to a social program: in our case, the money, $ 3,750, was invested in a soccer field for the children of our community.
As of today, COCAFCAL has participated in a variety of community development projects. In 2010, funds from coffee sales were donated to the Capucas Medical Center where much needed repairs and remodeling were finally completed. Furthermore, that same year, COCAFCAL assisted with a Peace Corps project where over 100 improved stoves and 30 garbage cans were installed around the community. Now, in 2011, COCAFCAL is supporting various local initiatives including the development of organic family gardens for over 200 participating families.
