A special annual competition, Te Van a Conocer Compa or ¨They´re going to get know you, friend¨, was started in 2008 and designed to showcase the best coffee of the region. Supported by some big traders and roasters, the competition has helped Capucas coffee become more widely known and has strengthened the relationship between the Coop and international buyers. The event has also inspired other origin coffee competitors around Honduras, a phenomenon that has helped to further improve the image of Honduran coffee on an international level.

COCAFCAL is a small coffee producers’ organization voluntarily joined by common needs, as well as similar economic, social and cultural aspirations. We practice a model of joint property, democratically controlled, based on cooperative principles, where all its members believe in shared ethical values.

Our Cooperative achieved its first “Organic Sale” to ELAN Organic Coffee. We received a premium of US $30 Dollars per burlap sack, a third of this money was dedicated to a social program: in our case, the money, $ 3,750, was invested in a soccer field for the children of our community.

As of today, COCAFCAL has participated in a variety of community development projects. In 2010, funds from coffee sales were donated to the Capucas Medical Center where much needed repairs and remodeling were finally completed. Furthermore, that same year, COCAFCAL assisted with a Peace Corps project where over 100 improved stoves and 30 garbage cans were installed around the community. Now, in 2011, COCAFCAL is supporting various local initiatives including the development of organic family gardens for over 200 participating families.

In December of 2008 the Cooperative installed its very own cupping laboratory thanks to technical support from Peace Corps volunteer Rebecca Stygar and a grant from United States Department of Agricuture and the Secretaria de Agricultura y Ganaderia, Honduras. The new laboratory has facilitated the Cooperative’s annual coffee competition, Te Van a Conocer Compa, and improved the Cooperative’s overall capacity to control product quality, by giving famers the knowledge to improve their coffee farming and processing based on cup results. The fully equipped laboratory enables testing of bean size, humidity and of course cupping of roasted coffee.
